The Origin & Identity
Embracing Imitation as the Ultimate Compliment
"tumi-isi" is an original object created by the Japanese product design label "A4" (A-yon). First unveiled in 2008 at the international trade fair "Ambiente" in Germany under the name "tumi-ishi," our creation inspired countless imitations across the globe.
Today, almost 100% of the products sold under that name on overseas websites are not manufactured by us. However, we choose to view this widespread imitation as a profound honor. It proves that our concept is loved worldwide, and we are deeply gratified if it has managed to create employment and happiness across the globe.
The Philosophy & Evolution
Reimagining Play, Reborn in Japan
Following its 2008 debut, production was temporarily paused. However, after discovering the perfect balance of form, production, and value in the historic region of Nara, we are proud to relaunch. To mark this fresh start, we streamlined the name from "tumi-ishi" to the more minimalist
【tumi-isi】 Restarting with versions crafted from premium Yoshino Cedar and Yoshino Cypress, we continue to rethink the traditional Japanese wooden block, winning both the Good Design Best 100 and the Local Design & Craftsmanship Award Grand Prix.
Craftsmanship & Safety
Stack, Roll, Decorate: 100% All Made in Nara
Designed to cultivate balance and creativity, tumi-isi invites children (ages 3+) and adults alike to explore balance and structure through randomly faceted wooden blocks. To ensure absolute peace of mind, every single block is painstakingly hand-shaped and hand-painted by local artisans.
We exclusively use paints that comply with the strict European toy safety standard (EN71-3). From sourcing 500-year-old Yoshino timber to machining, painting, assembly, and final inspection, our entire process is rooted in Higashiyoshino Village, Nara. This is sustainable, "All Made in Nara" craftsmanship meant to be repaired, loved, and passed down for decades.
