Traditional Indigo Dyeing Since 1906
Aizawa Senkojo specializes in custom-made indigo-dyed garments and textiles using traditional katazome (stencil dyeing) and aizome (natural indigo) techniques. We produce festival coats (hanten/happi), arm covers, noren curtains, nobori banners, and more — blending craftsmanship with modern everyday life.

Traditional Stencil Craft
Katagami
Hand-carved stencils used for generations.
We create hand-carved stencils (katagami) to apply traditional patterns on indigo-dyed hanten and other garments. This method, known as katazome (stencil dyeing), allows for beautiful, repeatable designs.
Stencils from our archive (arigata) can be used at no extra cost.

The Art of Indigo
Dyeing
We specialize in handcrafting hanten coats using traditional indigo dyeing methods. Before dyeing, we apply a soy-based liquid (go-ire) to the fabric—an old technique that helps the indigo bind more deeply.
Each piece is carefully brush-coated, dried, then repeatedly dipped into indigo vats and exposed to air. This cycle of dyeing and oxidation gives the fabric its deep, lasting color.

Traditional Japanese Typeface
Lettering
Bold, custom-drawn characters rooted in tradition.
Various traditional styles of lettering—such as Kakuji (block characters), Botan moji (peony-style), and Edo moji—are commonly used on indigo-dyed hanten coats.
These unique, hand-drawn characters often do not exist in modern fonts. We offer full custom lettering, including shadowed and outlined styles, to suit your design needs.
